Research-driven gear guides for hiking with your dog.
Hi — I’m Maya Reed. Switchback Paws exists to answer one question well: what gear is actually worth your money when you hike with your dog?
The dog-gear market is full of hype, sponsored praise, and copy-pasted reviews. We take a different approach — we do the homework most sites skip, and we show our work.
How we build our guides
Every guide on this site follows the same documented research process:
- Manufacturer specs, verified. We pull sizing charts, materials, and weight data straight from official product pages — and note where brands are vague.
- Real owner feedback, aggregated. For each product we analyze large samples of verified-purchase reviews and community discussions (Reddit hiking and dog-owner communities), and we report the consensus — including the complaints. When owners disagree, we tell you that too.
- Safety claims from real authorities only. Anything involving your dog’s health or safety (paw burn temperatures, weight-carrying limits) is sourced exclusively from veterinary organizations, academic research, or official bodies — never from blogs or our own guesses. Health decisions always belong with your vet.
- Full transparency. We have not yet field-tested the products we cover, and we say so clearly in every guide. As this site grows, we plan to add hands-on trail testing — and when we do, those sections will be clearly marked and backed by our own photos and notes.
What we promise
- Every recommendation is traceable to sources — we keep an internal research ledger for every claim we publish.
- Every product gets at least one honest drawback. Nothing is perfect, especially not on a rocky trail.
- Affiliate commissions never decide our rankings (see our Affiliate Disclosure).
- No AI-fabricated “experiences”, no stock photos pretending to be our own testing, no fake reviews. Ever.
Why “Switchback Paws”?
Switchbacks are the zigzag trails that get you up the mountains you couldn’t climb straight on — steady, smart, and built to last. That’s how we approach gear advice: no shortcuts, no hype, just the methodical route to the right answer for you and your dog.
